From 1 January 2021, you must pay at least four kroner for an ordinary carrier bag. Stores will no longer be allowed to hand out free carrier bags to customers. Many shops are at the forefront.
A new law enters into force, which requires the business community to charge at least four kroner for a carrier bag. At the same time, the thinner so-called βcrackle bagsβ of plastic are banned, which we can typically only use once.
The idea is that we should reduce the consumption of plastic and get used to using the bags several times, says Jakob Lamm Zeuthen, head of environmental policy at the Danish Chamber of Commerce.
Now itβs an even better idea to reuse your carrier bag. From the turn of the year, it will cost at least four kroner if you want to buy an ordinary carrier bag for your purchases.Β
An amendment to the Environmental Protection Act means that, for example, supermarkets, clothing stores and DIY stores are not allowed to hand out free plastic carrier bags to customers. The purpose is to promote the recycling of carrier bags. We are already used to the fact that it costs money to get a bag for the goods when we shop in the supermarket.Β

In addition to the minimum price for ordinary carrier bags, from 2021 it will be completely forbidden to hand out the thin plastic carrier bags that are typically used for takeaway. Thin plastic carrier bags must therefore not be handed out free of charge or for a fee.Β
The very thin plastic bags without handles, which are used for food, among other things, for reasons of hygiene and prevention of food waste, are exempt from the ban.Β

β Plastic carrier bags without a handle that are thinner than 30 micrometers (eg tear-off bags)
Excluded from the total ban, however, are plastic carrier bags without a handle that are thinner than 15 micrometers. These bags are exempt, as the bags are necessary for food for reasons of hygiene and prevention of food waste (typically for fruits and vegetables in supermarkets).
