Job Description

Sylvan is currently hiring tutors for our Schaumburg and Lake Zurich/Barrington, IL locations! Position is ideal for Education Degree students who are completing the Student Teaching requirement of their degree in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. You can earn money while you are completing your degree! Also an excellent position for students at local Community Colleges who are working on their Associates Degree with an Education focus, with the intention of transferring to a four-year college for their Education Degree. We are hiring Part-Time tutors and provide primarily in-person (some remote) tutoring for students K-12:

• Reading/English Tutor
• Math Tutor
• Early Elementary Reading Tutor
• Beginning Reading Tutor
• TestPrep (ACT/SAT) Tutor
• Writing Tutor
• Study Skills Tutor
• Tutors do not need proficiency in all areas above. We schedule to your area(s) of interest.

Requirements:

• For Reading/English tutors: Education/Teaching Degree required (or students pursuing their Education Degree who have done classroom observation or student teaching).
• For Math tutors: Strong proficiency through Algebra 2 (Education Degree not required).
• For TestPrep (ACT/SAT) Tutor: Strong ACT/SAT score (30/1400 preferred). Education Degree not required.
• 1 year of teaching or tutoring experience preferred.
• Ability to make connections with students.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to multi-task.
• Working out of one of our locations in Lake Zurich/Barrington or Schaumburg.

• Teach using Sylvan based programs
• Direct and motivate students during instruction
• Reward students for successful work
• Evaluate and document student progress
• Communicate student needs to our Educational Team
• Develop rapport with students and establish a fun, engaging learning environment
• Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching and Sylvan

Sylvan Learning Centers are the industry leaders in providing supplemental education to children in pre-K through 12th grade. We provide individualized instruction in Comprehension, Reading, English, Writing, Math and Study Skills. We also offer ACT/SAT Test Prep and STEM. We teach 7 days per week and require our teachers to work at least one of Saturday/Sunday, and at least one day during the week.
